Our Take: Who Spun It, Who Didn’t
Spin Meter: Some Spin
Five days on the job. Seven if you count from the day she was named. One briefing: 14 minutes, three questions, from Breitbart, Fox and the Daily Mail. That’s not a press briefing, that’s a group chat. Then the bar question showed up. Turns out she took the California bar, didn’t pass and never retook it, because she was moving to China and the results were “inconsequential.” They became pretty consequential.
Trump says he told her, “if I were you, I’d reconsider,” and swears it wasn’t a firing, because “I want her to have a good life.” That’s the most polite pink slip in American history. The best part: the people who finished her off weren’t CNN. It was Hannity and Fox & Friends. When your own team’s prime time asks about your resume, it’s over.
Upside: the next press secretary gets a very low bar to clear. Any bar, really.

MS NOW (opinion): “Katie Zacharia is not a lawyer — or press secretary, thanks to Trump”
It’s labeled opinion, so the headline is allowed to dance in the end zone, and it does. What surprised us: it actually explains the law, and admits her “lawyer” claims probably don’t break California’s statute. A cable-news opinion piece being fair to a Trump hire? Write down the date. Docked for the victory-lap tone.

AP: “White House press secretary leaving the job after just 5 days”
AP checked the actual bar records, quoted her statement, quoted Trump, and didn’t editorialize once. Uses an anonymous source for the departure, but the White House confirmed it the same day. Boring. Correct. That’s the job.
Right
Fox News: “Katie Zacharia dropped as press secretary after one week on the job”
Straight facts, the full Trump quote and an honest verb: “pushed out.” No spin on the exit. What it doesn’t dwell on is that Fox’s own hosts did the pushing. Covering your own network’s interview as if somebody else did it is a power move. We noticed.
The facts, checked
- CONFIRMEDNamed Oct. 9, first briefing Oct. 13: 14 minutes, three questions from Breitbart, Fox and the Daily Mail (AP, Fox, The Hill).
- CONFIRMEDShe told Hannity she failed the California bar and never retook it (Axios, Washington Post, WSJ).
- CONFIRMEDThe California State Bar has no licensing record for her under either name (AP via The Dispute Index).
- CONFIRMEDTrump said he told her to “reconsider” and said it wasn’t a firing; the White House says she’s “transitioning out” (Fox, The Hill, AP).
- REPORTEDA watchdog filed a California bar complaint. It’s a request to investigate, not a finding (Campaign for Accountability, The Dispute Index).
Closest to the truth: AP (center)
Both sides got the facts right here. Fox was straight on the exit and MS NOW was fair on the law, even while gloating. AP was the cleanest. Call it even between left and right. The spin wasn’t in the facts. It was in the tone, and both sides brought a little.
Satire-free zone: the jokes are ours, the facts are not made up. Grades and “Our Take” are analysis and opinion, not news. Scores follow the facts, not the team jersey.
Katie Zacharia may not be a licensed lawyer, but as they say, she plays one on TV. Or at least, she did.
On Friday, the White House confirmed Zacharia would no longer be serving as President Donald Trump’s press secretary, just three days after her first and only media briefing. Her ouster followed criticism from pundits, ethics experts…
